Never mistake motion for action.
~Ernest Hemingway
Have you ever been so busy that you haven't had time to really take care of yourself and the things that are most important? There is a comfort in being busy that gives us the illusion that we are really getting things done. In reality, we may just be busy, not effective.
Sometimes, being busy is a lot easier than really doing what needs to be done at the moment. I am reminded of the story of Martha and Mary. Martha was busy, but she really wasn't doing what was best for her. She was missing a tremendous opportunity with her worry and activity! Jesus said the Mary had chosen best--to sit at His feet.
My challenge for 2010 is to make sure my moments count. Filling the time with busy-ness isn't what is best. I must determine all the "open loops" in my life, get them written down, and then determine the very next step toward resolution in each area. If you are new to this "next step" concept, I highly recommend David Allen's books, Getting Things Done and Making it All Work. They are great reads to get yourself focused and productive for the new year.
So, what do you need to do next to make sure you are not just in motion, but taking action?
I think we all fall into the same trap at times. While it is always better to be active than inactive, it is best to plot out what it is that you want in your life, then build activities and goals to get you there. Personal reflection, and having honest friends and family really help in true effective change as well.
ReplyDeleteOuch. Convicting. I too find myself being busy, but not feeling like I'm accomplishing the things that matter the most.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder that being busy doesn't mean I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing!
